Yerba Mansa is a resilient, perennial wetland herb native to the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico. Belonging to the Saururaceae (Lizard's-tail) family, it features thick, waxy, dock-like green leaves that emit a highly distinctive, pungent, spicy, and earthy aroma when crushed. In spring and summer, it produces small, dense, cone-like flower spikes surrounded by striking, white petal-like bracts that slowly mature to a deep brick-red over time. Thermally, the plant is warming and drying, making it a classic remedy for stagnant, damp, and boggy tissue states.
Traditional Medicinal Uses
The aromatic roots and rhizomes of Yerba Mansa are highly valued in traditional and clinical herbalism for their astringent, antimicrobial, and stimulating properties:
- Mucous Membrane Tonic: It excels at addressing sub-acute or chronic boggy conditions, helping to tone and tighten lax, weeping, or hyper-secreting mucous membranes throughout the respiratory, digestive, and urinary tracts.
- Respiratory Support: It helps clear excessive, stagnant mucus and boggy congestion from the upper respiratory tract and sinuses.
- Urinary & Digestive Tract Comfort: Its soothing yet stimulating astringency provides deep support for stagnant, irritated conditions of the gut lining and urinary tract.
- Lymphatic Stimulant: Yerba Mansa encourages fluid movement and microcirculation, helping the body filter and clear metabolic waste from stagnant areas.
Precautions
While Yerba Mansa is an exceptionally powerful herb for stagnation, its potent qualities require mindful application:
- Pregnancy & Lactation: Avoid use during pregnancy and breastfeeding due to its stimulating effects and a lack of established safety data for these periods.
- Acute Inflammation/Dryness: Because it is profoundly drying and moving, it is generally contraindicated in cases of severe acute inflammation or strictly dry, atrophic tissue states.
- Medication Interactions: Consult a healthcare provider before pairing with pharmaceuticals, particularly medications that affect kidney function or fluid balance.

Available Formats: Elixir, Tincture, and Glycetract
We offer this herbal remedy in three different preparations to suit a variety of health needs, taste preferences, and sensitivities. Whether you're looking for a traditional alcohol-based tincture, a sweet and nourishing elixir (also contains alcohol), or a gentle alcohol-free glycetract, you can choose the form that’s right for you or your loved ones.
Glycetract (Glycerite)
Glycetracts are alcohol-free extracts made using vegetable glycerin and water. They are ideal for those who are sensitive to alcohol, including children, pets, or those with liver conditions. While they are not always as potent as tinctures, they are still effective and particularly well-suited for milder conditions or long-term support.
Best for: Children, pets, those avoiding alcohol, or for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding (with practitioner advice).
Elixir
Elixirs are traditional herbal preparations made using a blend of alcohol, Glycerin, and water. They are often used when you want both therapeutic action and a palatable, sweetish flavour, especially for those who prefer not to taste the bitterness of herbs.
Best for: Adults and children - ages 1+, general wellness and those who dislike bitter tinctures.
Tincture
Tinctures are highly concentrated herbal extracts made using alcohol as a solvent. This is one of the most effective ways to extract the full medicinal spectrum of most herbs, including alkaloids, essential oils, and resins.
Best for: Adults or those looking for fast, potent results. Not ideal for those sensitive to alcohol, reformed alcoholics or for young children under 1.
By purchasing and using these tinctures, you accept full responsibility for their use and agree to do so at your own discretion. For any questions about these products, please reach out to us prior to purchasing.
Which One Should I Choose?
- Want the strongest, fastest effect? Choose a Tincture.
- Prefer a sweeter, more nourishing option? Go for an Elixir.
- Need something gentle and alcohol-free? Opt for a Glycetract.
- If you want the most complete, full-spectrum extract? choose the Alchemy Elixir.
