Silverbeet - Organic Fordhook

A classic garden standby, Silverbeet 'Fordhook Giant' produces broad, deeply crumpled, dark green leaves with heavy, thick white ribs and stems. Exceptionally hardy and resilient, it yields continuous harvests of tender, mild-flavored greens through both hot summer months and cold winter periods. Highly versatile in the kitchen, the tender leaves can be used like spinach, while the crisp, thick white stems can be steamed or chopped into stir-fries like celery.

Planting Instructions

• Position: Plant in full sun to partial shade in deep, fertile, moisture-retentive soil heavily amended with compost or well-rotted manure.
• Transplanting: Carefully ease seedlings from their nursery container, taking care not to disturb or tear the roots.
• Depth & Spacing: Plant at the same depth as the nursery pot. Space individual plants 35–40 cm apart to give the large, broad stalks plenty of room to spread.
• Watering: Water deeply and regularly to encourage continuous, rapid stem growth and keep the foliage crisp and tender.
• Harvest: Harvest outer stalks as needed by twisting them gently downward and pulling cleanly from the base, leaving the inner shoots to keep producing continuously.
