Rock Melon - Organic Hales Best

A famous 1920s heirloom favourite, Rockmelon 'Hale's Best' (also known as Cantaloupe) is celebrated for producing sweet, heavily netted, oval melons with vibrant, deep orange flesh. Highly aromatic, juicy, and rich in vitamins A and C, it delivers classic, mouth-watering summer flavour. This vigorous vine exhibits excellent drought and powdery mildew resistance, making it a reliable, high-yielding choice for warm-season growing.

Planting Instructions

• Position: Requires a hot, sheltered position in full sun. Thrives in rich, free-draining soil heavily amended with compost or well-rotted manure.
• Transplanting: Melons have sensitive root systems that dislike disturbance. Handle seedlings gently when easing them out of their nursery cells, keeping the root ball intact.
• Depth & Spacing: Plant at the exact depth the seedling was sitting in its container. Allow vines plenty of room to spread by spacing plants 90–100 cm apart in rows 1.5 metres apart.
• Watering: Water deeply and regularly at the base to keep the soil consistently moist while vines develop and fruit sets. Avoid wetting the leaves to prevent foliar diseases. Reduce watering slightly as fruits reach full size to concentrate natural sugars.
• Harvest: Harvest after 12–14 weeks when the melon reaches a warm, golden buff-coloured netting, gives off a sweet fragrance, and easily "slips" off the vine with a gentle press of the stem.
