Pumpkin - Organic Butternut

Pumpkin 'Butternut' is an exceptionally popular winter squash prized for its smooth, tan skin and dense, sweet, nutty orange flesh. With a small seed cavity, it offers maximum yield per fruit and a velvety, fine-grained texture that holds up beautifully in roasting, baking, puréeing into soups, or adding to curries and warm salads. Highly productive and resistant to common squash pests, it stores exceptionally well for months after harvest.

Planting Instructions

• Position: Plant in a warm, sheltered spot receiving full sun (at least 6–8 hours daily). Requires rich, fertile, free-draining soil heavily amended with well-rotted manure or compost.
• Transplanting: Handle seedlings with extreme care—squash roots are delicate and dislike disturbance. Ease gently from the nursery cell without tearing the root ball.
• Depth & Spacing: Plant into the ground at the exact depth of the nursery pot. Give vines plenty of room by spacing plants 1–1.5 metres apart, or plant on mounds 1.5–2 metres apart.
• Watering: Water deeply at the base of the plant to keep the root system evenly moist. Avoid wetting the leaves to prevent powdery mildew, especially as vines expand.
• Harvest: Harvest after 12–16 weeks when the skin turns a uniform buff-tan, hardens so it cannot be easily pierced with a fingernail, and the stem begins to dry and turn woody. Cut with 5 cm of stem attached for long-term storage.
