Lettuce - Organic Cos

A staple garden green, Lettuce 'Cos' (also known as Romaine) is prized for its tall, upright heads of thick, crisp leaves with a juicy center and refreshing flavor. Excellent heat tolerance makes it far less prone to bolting than soft-leaf varieties. Famous as the essential base for Caesar salads, its sturdy, dark-green outer leaves and tender yellow heart add a satisfying crunch to sandwiches, wraps, and fresh side salads.

Planting Instructions

• Position: Plant in full sun to partial shade in loose, moist, organic-rich soil that drains well. Providing afternoon shade during hotter months helps prolong harvesting.
• Transplanting: Carefully remove seedlings from their nursery container and plant without burying the crown.
• Depth & Spacing: Plant at the same depth as the nursery pot. Space plants 25–30 cm apart in rows 30 cm apart to ensure good airflow and room for dense heads to form.
• Watering: Keep soil consistently moist with shallow, regular waterings. Drought stress can cause leaves to taste bitter or trigger premature bolting.
• Harvest: Pick outer individual leaves as needed for a continuous "cut-and-come-again" harvest, or slice the full head off at ground level when fully mature (around 6–8 weeks after transplanting).
