Native to the arid Kalahari desert and steppes of Southern Africa, Devil’s Claw (Harpagophytum procumbens) derives its evocative name from the tiny, hook-like barb projections covering its wooden fruit pods. Long treasured by San and Khoisan healers as a paramount remedy for deep joint discomfort, digestive sluggishness, and feverish heat, it was brought to European medicine in the early 20th century. Rich in iridoid glycosides—specifically harpagoside—alongside bitter flavonoids, Devil's Claw Root is celebrated in modern clinical naturopathy and Western herbalism as a premier musculoskeletal comfort botanical and systemic metabolic harmonizer.

TASTE & ENERGETICS

  • Taste: Deeply bitter, earthy, slightly acrid
  • Energetics: Cooling, drying, clearing, relaxing

TRADITIONALLY USED FOR:

  • Joint Comfort & Structural Mobility: Easing stiffness, aching joints, and structural soreness in knees, hips, and hands to support flexible, easy movement.
  • Lower Back & Musculoskeletal Ease: Comforting overused lumbar muscles, tendons, and connective tissue following physical strain or long-standing wear and tear.
  • Uric Acid & Metabolic Clearance: Assisting the kidneys in clearing accumulated metabolic waste products and systemic acid buildup.
  • Bitter Digestive Awakening: Stimulating gastric secretions and bile flow to awaken a sluggish appetite and relieve heavy post-meal fullness.

BREWING & PREPARATION INSTRUCTIONS

  • Decoction (Root Brew): Add 1 teaspoon of cut Devil's Claw Root to 1.5–2 cups of cold water in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, cover with a lid, and gently simmer low for 15–20 minutes. Strain thoroughly and sip warm up to 2 times daily.
  • Practitioner Note: Due to its profound bitter profile, brewing alongside warming or sweet aromatic herbs is recommended for daily enjoyment.

Pack Sizes & Servings:

  • 15g Bag: Approx. 5 to 7 cups (Perfect for sampling)
  • 25g Bag: Approx. 10 to 12 cups (Ideal for a 1-week daily routine)
  • 50g Bag: Approx. 20 to 25 cups (Best value for a full month's daily ritual)

Calculated based on 1 gently heaped teaspoon (approx. 2g–3g) per 250ml cup.

Serving estimates are based on a standard 1 tsp (approx. 2g) per cup. Yield may vary slightly depending on the density of specific root, seed, or leaf blends.
