Beetroot - Organic Bullsblood

Beetroot 'Bull's Blood' is a striking 1840s heirloom variety celebrated for its rich, deep-violet to ruby-red foliage and tender, sweet, dark-red globe roots. Exceptionally versatile, it is grown both for its tender young leaves—a prized addition to fresh salads that adds intense colour and a earthy, sweet flavour—and for its sweet, earthy roots. Highly resilient and quick to mature, it offers both ornamental beauty and culinary value throughout the growing season.

Planting Instructions

• Position: Plant in full sun to light partial shade in loose, deeply worked, free-draining soil free of stones. Amend with well-rotted organic matter, avoiding heavy nitrogen fertilizers which encourage top growth over root development.
• Transplanting: Carefully ease seedlings from their nursery cells to protect the developing taproot. Handle by the leaves or root ball rather than the delicate main stem.
• Depth & Spacing: Plant at the same depth as the nursery cell. Space individual seedlings 8–10 cm apart in rows 25–30 cm apart to allow roots room to swell evenly.
• Watering: Water regularly and consistently to keep the soil evenly moist. Even moisture prevents roots from becoming woody or split and keeps the foliage tender.
• Harvest: Harvest tender outer leaves once they reach 5–8 cm long for salads. Harvest the sweet, round roots when they reach golf-ball to tennis-ball size (around 7–9 weeks from transplanting) for the best texture and flavor.
