Revered throughout European folklore and classical herbalism, Arnica (Arnica montana)—also known as "Mountain Daisy" or "Leopard's Bane"—grows wild in high-elevation mountain pastures. Hildegard von Bingen and early European healers recognized its exceptional ability to restore tissue comfort following physical overexertion or minor trauma. Historically prized as a master botanical for moving stagnation, Arnica remains the premier herbal ally for topical circulation and physical recovery.
TASTE & ENERGETICS
- Energetics: Warming, drying, circulating
TRADITIONALLY USED FOR (TOPICAL APPLICATION):
- Musculoskeletal Comfort: Assisting tired, overused muscles, sore joints, and post-exercise strain.
- Bruising & Tissue Recovery: Promoting healthy local blood circulation to soothe minor bumps, swelling, and trapped fluid.
- Soothe Physical Tension: Easing localized discomfort from tension, physical impacts, or everyday stiffness.
- Foot Soaks & Circulation: Revitalizing tired, aching feet and promoting warmth in cold or fatigued extremities.
SUGGESTED PREPARATION (FOR EXTERNAL USE ONLY)
- Infused Herbal Oil: Steep dried flowers in carrier oil (such as Olive or Jojoba oil) in a warm, dark place for 2–4 weeks. Strain carefully and use as a soothing massage oil or base for homemade salves and balms.
- Compresses & Fomentations: Infuse 1–2 tablespoons of dried flowers in a pot of hot water for 20 minutes. Strain thoroughly, soak a clean cloth in the warm liquid, and apply topically to intact skin over sore areas.
- Revitalizing Foot Soak: Add a strong warm infusion of Arnica flowers to a basin of warm water with Epsom salts to soothe tired, aching feet. (Note: Do not apply Arnica directly to broken or open skin. Do not ingest.)
