Panax quinquefolium

American Ginseng is a well-respected adaptogenic herb traditionally used in Native American and Western herbal medicine. Known for its cooling and nourishing properties, this herb helps support the body during periods of stress, fatigue, and low energy. Unlike its more stimulating cousin Panax ginseng (Asian ginseng), American Ginseng offers a gentle lift — making it ideal for people who feel drained, overworked, or in recovery from chronic health issues.

Medicinal Uses

  • Energy & Adrenal Support - American Ginseng is classified as an adaptogen, which means it helps your body adapt to physical, mental, and emotional stress. It nourishes rather than stimulates the adrenal glands, making it useful for long-term fatigue, burnout, or HPA axis dysregulation.
  • Cognitive function & Mental ClarityThis herb has been shown to improve memory, concentration, and cognitive performance — especially when under stress. It is commonly used to support busy professionals, students, and anyone facing mental fatigue.
  • Immune ModulationAmerican Ginseng helps to regulate the immune system, making it a helpful herb for people with weakened immunity, frequent infections, or those recovering from illness. It is often included in immune restoration protocols.
  • Hormonal Balance & Blood Sugar - This remedy can gently support hormonal balance in both men and women. It also helps stabilise blood sugar levels, especially in those who experience energy crashes or sugar cravings due to stress-related dysregulation.
  • Gentle for Sensitive TypeBecause American Ginseng is less heating and stimulating than other ginsengs, it is better suited to individuals who are constitutionally sensitive, anxious, or easily overstimulated.

Native Americans used the root as a stimulant and to treat

  • headaches
  • fever
  • indigestion
  • infertility
  • Lowers blood sugar levels in diabetics (type 2)
  •  enhances the immune system
  • ADHD
  • Colds and Flu
  • Reduce Stress
  • manage sexual dysfunction in men
  • Lowers cholesterol

Precautions

While American Ginseng is generally considered safe and well-tolerated, there are a few precautions to be aware of:

  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Avoid use unless prescribed by a qualified herbalist or naturopath.
  • Medication Interactions: Use with caution if you are taking medications for blood sugar control, blood pressure, or anticoagulants.
  • Acute Infections: Not recommended during the acute stage of an illness (such as colds or flu) as it is more restorative than defensive.
  • Stimulant Sensitivity: Although milder than other ginsengs, if you're highly sensitive to herbal remedies, start with a low dose and build gradually.

Available Formats: Elixir, Tincture, and Glycetract

We offer this herbal remedy in three different preparations to suit a variety of health needs, taste preferences, and sensitivities. Whether you're looking for a traditional alcohol-based tincture, a sweet and nourishing elixir (also contains alcohol), or a gentle alcohol-free glycetract, you can choose the form that’s right for you or your loved ones.

Elixir

Elixirs are traditional herbal preparations made using a blend of alcohol, Glycerine, and water. They are often used when you want both therapeutic action and a palatable, sweetish flavour, especially for those who prefer not to taste the bitterness of herbs.

Best for: Adults and children - ages 1+, general wellness and those who dislike bitter tinctures.

Tincture

Tinctures are highly concentrated herbal extracts made using alcohol as a solvent. This is one of the most effective ways to extract the full medicinal spectrum of most herbs, including alkaloids, essential oils, and resins.

Best for: Adults or those looking for fast, potent results. Not ideal for those sensitive to alcohol, reformed alcoholics or for young children under 1.

Glycetract (Glycerite)

Glycetracts are alcohol-free extracts made using vegetable glycerine and water. They are ideal for those who are sensitive to alcohol, including children, pets, or those with liver conditions. While they are not always as potent as tinctures, they are still effective and particularly well-suited for milder conditions or long-term support.

Best for: Children, pets, those avoiding alcohol, or for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding (with practitioner advice).

Which One Should I Choose?

  • Want the strongest, fastest effect? Choose a Tincture.
  • Prefer a sweeter, more nourishing option? Go for an Elixir.
  • Need something gentle and alcohol-free? Opt for a Glycetract.
