Rhubarb - Organic Victoria

Rhubarb 'Victoria' is a classic, highly dependable heirloom variety renowned for producing heavy yields of thick, succulent stalks with a brilliant ruby-red base shading into bright green. It offers a wonderfully crisp texture and a bold, tart flavor that balances beautifully with sweet dishes. Perfect for stewing, jams, pies, crumbles, and compotes, this perennial crop is exceptionally hardy and will continue to produce abundant harvests year after year once established.

Planting Instructions

• Position: Plant in full sun to partial shade in deep, fertile, highly organic soil. Rhubarb is a heavy feeder and thrives when the soil is enriched with plenty of aged manure or compost prior to planting.
• Transplanting: Carefully ease seedlings from their nursery cells, keeping the root ball intact and taking care not to bury the central growing crown.
• Depth & Spacing: Plant into the ground at the exact depth it was sitting in the container. Space plants 80–100 cm apart, as mature plants form large, broad crowns with expansive foliage.
• Watering: Water deeply and regularly, especially during dry spells. Mulch generously around the base—keeping clear of the crown itself—to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
• Harvest: Allow plants to build root strength during their first growing season by harvesting sparingly. From the second year onwards, harvest by twisting and pulling thick outer stalks cleanly from the base (never cut with a knife). Note: Rhubarb leaf blades contain high levels of oxalic acid and are toxic—always remove and discard the leaf blades, eating only the stalks.
