Fennel seeds are the dried ripe fruits of the fennel plant, a tall perennial in the carrot family. They have been a staple of both Western and Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years, prized for their aromatic sweetness and warming energy. The seeds contain a much higher percentage of essential oils compared to the leaves, giving them a more intense, licorice-like flavor and a more potent medicinal effect on smooth muscle tissue
Medicinal Uses
- Potent Carminative: The seeds are a specific remedy for relieving gas, bloating, and intestinal spasms by relaxing the smooth muscles of the digestive tract.
- Galactagogue: Widely used to increase the production and flow of breast milk in nursing mothers.
- Hormonal Support: Contains phytoestrogens that can help regulate the menstrual cycle and alleviate painful cramps (dysmenorrhea).
- Expectoration: Helps to thin and clear mucus from the lungs, making it useful for productive coughs and upper respiratory congestion.
- Appetite Suppressant: Traditionally chewed to stave off hunger during fasting and to support metabolic "fire."
Precautions
- Pregnancy: Therapeutic doses of the seed or its oil should be avoided during pregnancy due to its potential estrogenic effects.
- Hormone-Sensitive Conditions: Use with caution if you have a history of conditions like endometriosis or certain cancers, as the herb mimics estrogen.
- Medication Interactions: May reduce the effectiveness of birth control pills and can interact with the antibiotic Ciprofloxacin.
- Bleeding Disorders: May slow blood clotting; use with caution if taking anticoagulant medications.
Fennel seed is the powerhouse of the plant, specifically indicated when you need to "move" stagnant energy in the gut or reproductive system. It is a warm, diffusive ally that excels at calming physical tension and promoting flow throughout the body's various channels.
Fennel Leaf
The feathery, bright green fronds of the fennel plant offer a lighter, more "green" expression of the plant's medicine. While they share the same aromatic compounds as the seeds, they are found in much lower concentrations. The leaves are rich in chlorophyll, Vitamin C, and potassium, giving them a more cooling and nutritive character compared to the concentrated warmth of the seeds.
Medicinal Uses
- Mild Digestive Tonic: Provides a gentler carminative effect suitable for sensitive stomachs or mild indigestion.
- Diuretic Properties: Acts as a mild "aquatic" cleanser, encouraging the kidneys to flush toxins and reduce minor fluid retention.
- Nutritive Support: High in antioxidants and minerals, making it a great addition to tonics intended for overall vitality and "blood cleaning.
- Eye Health: Traditionally used as a wash (when strained carefully) to soothe tired or inflamed eyes and improve visual clarity.
- Oral Health: Chewing the fresh leaves can help freshen the breath and reduce oral bacteria
Precautions
- Photosensitivity: Like many plants in the Apiaceae family, excessive consumption or topical contact with the juice can occasionally increase skin sensitivity to UV light.
- Allergic Sensitivity: Individuals allergic to carrots or celery may also react to fennel leaves.
- Kidney Health: Because of its diuretic nature, those with significant kidney impairment should consult a practitioner before using it in large medicinal quantities.
Fennel leaf is the "gentle cousin" to the seed, acting more as a nutritive cleanser than a potent antispasmodic. It is ideally suited for daily wellness support, mild fluid balance, and adding a vitalizing, aromatic spark to a herbal protocol without the intense hormonal influence of the seeds.

Available Formats: Elixir, Tincture, and Glycetract
We offer this herbal remedy in three different preparations to suit a variety of health needs, taste preferences, and sensitivities. Whether you're looking for a traditional alcohol-based tincture, a sweet and nourishing elixir (also contains alcohol), or a gentle alcohol-free glycetract, you can choose the form that’s right for you or your loved ones.
Glycetract (Glycerite)
Glycetracts are alcohol-free extracts made using vegetable glycerin and water. They are ideal for those who are sensitive to alcohol, including children, pets, or those with liver conditions. While they are not always as potent as tinctures, they are still effective and particularly well-suited for milder conditions or long-term support.
Best for: Children, pets, those avoiding alcohol, or for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding (with practitioner advice).
Elixir
Elixirs are traditional herbal preparations made using a blend of alcohol, Glycerin, and water. They are often used when you want both therapeutic action and a palatable, sweetish flavour, especially for those who prefer not to taste the bitterness of herbs.
Best for: Adults and children - ages 1+, general wellness and those who dislike bitter tinctures.
Tincture
Tinctures are highly concentrated herbal extracts made using alcohol as a solvent. This is one of the most effective ways to extract the full medicinal spectrum of most herbs, including alkaloids, essential oils, and resins.
Best for: Adults or those looking for fast, potent results. Not ideal for those sensitive to alcohol, reformed alcoholics or for young children under 1.
By purchasing and using these tinctures, you accept full responsibility for their use and agree to do so at your own discretion. For any questions about these products, please reach out to us prior to purchasing.
Which One Should I Choose?
- Want the strongest, fastest effect? Choose a Tincture.
- Prefer a sweeter, more nourishing option? Go for an Elixir.
- Need something gentle and alcohol-free? Opt for a Glycetract.
