Eggplant - Black Beauty

An classic heirloom staple, Eggplant 'Black Beauty' produces high yields of large, glossy, deep purple-black fruit with tender, creamy white flesh.  From India, developed in Spain in 16th century. Growing conditions as for tomato, though Eggplant needs a longer growing season, treat as perennial in warmer climates. Loved for its smooth texture and rich, non-bitter flavour, it is perfect for roasting, grilling, making moussaka, or slicing into classic eggplant parmigiana. This bushy, heat-loving plant produces continuously throughout the warm season.

Planting Instructions

• Position: Requires a hot, sheltered spot in full sun (at least 6–8 hours daily). Plant in warm, fertile, well-draining soil heavily enriched with compost or aged manure.
• Transplanting: Gently ease seedlings from their cells, taking care not to disturb the root ball.
• Depth & Spacing: Plant into the ground at the same depth as the seedling pot, or slightly deeper. Space individual plants 50–60 cm apart to allow for their broad, bushy growth.
• Support: Place a small stake or plant cage next to the seedling at planting time to support the heavy fruit and prevent stems from snapping later in the season.
• Watering: Water deeply and regularly at the base of the plant to keep the root zone evenly moist. Mulch well around the base to retain ground heat and moisture.
• Harvest: Harvest after 8–10 weeks when the skin is smooth, shiny, and high-gloss. Cut fruit from the stem with secateurs rather than pulling to protect the plant.
