Hormones play a key role in our overall health and wellbeing. If our hormones are out of balance, then we are out of balance. Our hormones will fluctuate throughout our life and can be affected by many factors, such as:
Environmental (External) Factors
‘Xeno’ is the Greek word for ‘foreign’. This is precisely what these chemicals (xenoestrogens) are to the body. Xenoestrogens mimic the effect of hormones, attaching themselves to oestrogen receptors and interfering with normal hormone signalling, therefore creating imbalance.
Xenoestrogens are man-made chemicals present in many substances, ranging from household cleaning products to plastics and even pollution. Fresh produce also contain hidden pesticides and herbicides. If you are a hairdresser, painter, cleaner, acrylic nail technician, a dentist working with chemicals such as mercury and fluoride, or a farmer or gardener who regularly sprays crops and plants, then you may have high exposure to xenoestrogens.
Additional external factors, that may impact our hormones, include a diet high in processed foods and sugars, excessive alcohol intake, antibiotic therapy, smoking and stress.
Hereditary (genetic) disease and genetic predisposition, or susceptibility, play a significant role in hormone imbalance. One example of this is hypothyroidism, whereby an underactive thyroid gland does not make enough thyroid hormone. This hormone deficiency may cause symptoms such as fatigue, weight gain, a tendency to feel cold, dry skin and brittle hair and nails.
Hormone Imbalance in Women
For women, hormone imbalance may cause symptoms such as acne, problematic periods and dysmenorrhea (menstrual cramps), endometriosis, fibroids, menopause, PMS, polycystic ovaries, abnormal hair growth and loss of libido.
Hormone Imbalance in Men
For men, hormone imbalance may cause symptoms such as hair loss, weight gain, gynecomastia (swelling of the breast tissue), muscle loss, erectile dysfunction, low libido and urinary problems.
